Medication Management
Medication with Purpose
Medications can play a vital role in healing when used thoughtfully and combined with other approaches to address underlying issues within the body. Our integrative approach combines targeted medication strategies with holistic therapies, empowering you to achieve lasting mental wellness while minimizing reliance on medications over time.
Our Philosophy on Medication
At Etherios Therapy, we take a cautious and thoughtful approach to medication, using it as one of many tools to support holistic healing. While we recognize the lifesaving role medication can play, we also acknowledge its potential downsides, including overprescription and challenges with discontinuation. Our goal is to help clients use medication effectively and temporarily, while empowering them to build long-term resilience through other therapeutic approaches.
A Guide to Medications
Drawbacks of Long-Term Medication Use
While medications can effectively manage acute symptoms in the short term, long-term use often presents significant challenges. Studies like the STAR*D trial reveal that antidepressants may fail to sustain long-term remission, leaving many patients with lingering symptoms such as fatigue or poor concentration, which can increase relapse risks and lead to dependency.
Research also highlights potential downsides of prolonged medication use, including "tardive dysphoria," where depression worsens despite continued treatment, and "tardive apathy," characterized by emotional disconnection. Over time, medications may lose efficacy, requiring higher doses or frequent changes. These findings underscore the importance of integrative approaches that address the root causes of mental health challenges rather than merely managing symptoms.
Navigating Discontinuation of Medication
Coming off psychiatric medication can be challenging, but it’s achievable with the right support and a thoughtful plan. Abruptly stopping is not recommended due to the risk of severe withdrawal symptoms. Instead, a slow taper is advised, typically reducing doses by no more than 10% every 4-8 weeks, with the help of a compounding pharmacy for precise microdoses. In some cases, transitioning from one medication to another that’s easier to taper can also be a helpful strategy.
To ensure your body is prepared, it’s important to first assess gut health, nutritional status, and mitochondrial function. Throughout the process, we provide supervision, regular monitoring, and holistic support, including nutritional guidance and stress management, to ease withdrawal symptoms and maintain stability. Our aim is to help you taper successfully and move toward lasting mental wellness.
Our focus is to help you navigate medication, whatever your needs are. Whether you’re beginning, managing, or discontinuing medication, we will meet you where you're at. We’re here to support you on your journey to long lasting healing.
